Welch A Trojan that seems to target Iranian government agencies has been discovered, but the group responsible for creating the malware has so far eluded investigators, according to two reports from two separate security research teams. In an analysis published Aug. 15 by Moscow-based cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab, the group dubbed "Hacker Team Poison Ivy" said it created "Persian Rain" in March 2013. A Trojan which has been targeting Iranian government agencies has been discovered. The initial version of Persian Rain has been developed to target two Iranian state-owned companies, the Iranian Postal Service and the Iranian Air Force. Those services were targeted by the malware, which the Hacker Team Poison Ivy calls "an effective way to pay the bills," according to Kaspersky Lab. Kaspersky Lab's report, published here (in Russian), described the malware as an extremely sophisticated piece of software that was made to be difficult to detect. "The authors of Persian Rain have created a really good implementation of the traditional infector [Trojan] process," Kaspersky Lab said. "It is difficult to detect and starts its work quietly, without anyone noticing it on the system." While most malware is associated with fraud or other criminal activities, the Russian security firm said that Persian Rain was much more sophisticated, and it appears to be a "potentially very dangerous threat." The Kaspersky Lab report, like the one from another security research firm, Symantec, says that Persian Rain is based on the Titanium Stuxnet worm. Symantec's report, published Aug. 15, says the hacker group may have created the Persian Rain malware in response to the Stuxnet attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. "Stuxnet is the work of a group of highly skilled engineers," Symantec said in a statement. "It is therefore entirely possible that Persian Rain was the work of another group of highly skilled engineers, or at least that it was developed with similar intent, to further one's ambition to create a'suicide' virus." In addition to targeting government-owned organizations, Persian Rain has also targeted banks and financial institutions, according to both Kaspersky Lab and Symantec. But the Iranian government isn't the only one that's been targeted by Persian Rain, according to both security firms. "Iranian financial institutions have also become the target of a new variant of the Stuxnet virus," Symantec said in its report. "We've also seen Persian Rain used in attacks on other countries," Kaspersky Lab said. "There is also the possibility of targeting foreign organizations."
